Deficit or Defiance? Addressing Barriers to Learning in the Clinical Setting

This theory-based session focuses on identifying and assessing reasons for a learner’s deficit(s). Recognizing all parties contribute to the creation and maintenance of an environment conducive to learning, common pitfalls to evaluation lying within the learner and the attending/teacher are addressed. Discussion includes guidelines for giving useful feedback and provides three key elements of any remediation plan. Adult learning theories are also incorporated into the session.

• Assess whether the learner’s deficits are representative of her/his stage of learning

• Identify 3 elements of an environment conducive to learning
